A big thank you to our Oakland Heights partners for letting us practice with your students. We learned so much about administering running records and giving effective feedback to student writers!
Thank you Oakland Heights for allowing our education class to come and participate in third and fourth grade classrooms! Thank you Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Berry for hosting half of our class in both of your classrooms. I enjoyed giving a running record to a student in Mrs. Berry’s class. I also enjoyed learning about the different columns for grading a running record. This was good practice. In Mrs. Harris’s room I liked how you had several different ways to work on the students reading fluency, decoding words, and working on onset and rime. I liked the folder where the students paired up and read to each other, then marking where they stopped, and then recording their results throughout the week. I loved this idea. The students are then accountable to themselves as well as their peer. Again I would like to thank you all for this wonderful learning opportunity!
Thank you Oakland Heights for allowing our whole class come and visit your school. It was a great learning experience. We got to visit third and fourth grade classrooms. I enjoyed the hands-on experience with running records and I surely learned a lot in that short process. It was also a good opportunity to work with fourth grade students on their editing process. I really enjoyed working with a variety of students on this visit and it was extremely beneficial. Thank you again to all of the hosting teachers and the principal for allowing us to visit!
Thank you to Oakland Heights faculty/staff for allowing our class to come visit your school. I really enjoyed getting to practice with the students administering running records in Mrs. Berry's class. This is something we will have to do a lot of so it definitely helped to get some extra practice with it. I liked that we got to see two different versions of the running record being given and how each of those are given. In Mrs. Harris's room I worked with a student on fluency. I liked that the students normally work in pairs and hold each other accountable for their progress. This was a new option that I haven't seen yet. Once again, thank you to Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Harris and the whole staff of Oakland Heights for this great opportunity and allowing our class to come visit!
Thank you Oakland Heights for allowing our class to observe and interact with your third and fourth grade students. This was a wonderful learning experience for all of us as we practiced with running records, fluency reading, and sight words. My group got the chance to interact in both classes of Mrs. Berry and Mrs. Harris and I want to thank both of you so much! In Mrs. Berry's classroom, she allowed us the real experience of administering running records and showed us how to evaluate the running records as well. In Mrs. Harris' classroom we learned how to work with students on practicing fluency reading and we got the chance to work with students to create sight words while using the rime and onset parts of words to pair together to form a word. Both of these experiences were amazing and I learned many things that I will benefit from when I become a teacher. Once again, thank you to all who worked together to create this opportunity to observe and interact with the students in your school!
Thank you Oakland Heights for allowing our class into your school last Friday! The first classroom I went to was Mrs. Berry’s class. In Mrs. Berry’s class we completed a running record with a student. As the child was reading, I listened very carefully to what he said and took note of any mistakes. It was very beneficial to do a running record. When everyone was finished Mrs. Berry explained to the group how to interpret the running record scores. We also got to see some examples of other running records she has done with students in the past.
In Mrs. Harris’ room, my group worked with two students on creating words from onset and rime cards. The two children we worked with did a great job creating words from the cards they were provided. Mrs. Harris explained to us a few different things her students do such as listening to each other read throughout the week. The students work in groups and monitor their partner’s progress throughout the work to see how many words they can read. I think this is an excellent activity to do with students! If I teach third or fourth grade, I will use an activity like this in my class. I think it is beneficial to all students and teach the students that they can help their peers with their academic progress.
Overall, the visit to Oakland Heights was beneficial to my knowledge of running records and reading fluency/onset and rime. Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to let us work with students!
My visit to Oakland Heights was memorable and I learned so much from Mrs. Berry and Mrs. Harris! In Mrs. Berry's room, I learned how to use certain symbols on a running record. This was a skill I really needed to know, considering running records are a reoccurring activity in the classroom. In Mrs. Harris' room, I got to work with an English language-learner and his alphabet. I am thankful for that opportunity to work with him. Thank you so much for letting us come into your classrooms and learn! It was a great experience!
The last time that I entered the doors of Oakland Heights I was in high school when I went Christmas caroling with my Spanish class to sing to the kids a few years back. I remember thinking what a wonderful school it was and I'm so glad that my experience coming back there with my ECED class was just as wonderful. To both of the teachers that allowed our class to share time with their class, we are incredibly appreciative of your time. I say that with a lot of gratefulness because the further into our program we get into, the more we understand the importance of time for a teacher. It was wonderful getting to work in classrooms with so many diverse children! I will be sure to carry the knowledge they have given me into my future classroom and students. Thank you all so much!
Thank you Oakland Heights Elementary School for providing my peers and I with a great experience! Mr. Livermoore shared tips on what he personally expects Interns to know pertaining to CCSS standards. It was interesting to see the differences in each student's writing. Each student was excited to share their ideas and how they self correct their writing. Ms. Tankersley provided an awesome exercise with running records. Each Tech student was paired with a third grade student to perform a running record. The hands on experience was so beneficial. Thank you for taking time out of your morning to share pertinent information with us!
Friday my group started in Mrs. Berry’s classroom. She was working on a math group and let us practice running records with her students. After performing the running record she explained it in detail to us. I have had the chance to do running records with my observing classroom, but they looked different that these. Mrs. Berry broke down the running records and the individual components and where to make marks. In the second classroom, we were given the opportunity to work on different activities with the students and observe them in their reading time. Katie and I worked with Danny and Job practicing their fluency in reading. We watched them read for a minute and chart their reading for the week. After their fluency practice Danny and Job talked to us about their reading and what they like to do. Both of these classes were great practice and I learned a lot.
Thank you to all of the faculty and staff at Oakland Heights that allowed our Language and Literacy class to come in and visit your school. My group was able to observe in both Ms. Tankersley and Mr. Livermore's 3rd and 4th grade classroom. It was so nice to work with older fourth grade students during the editing portion of their writing process. I haven’t been able to have as much time with older students so this opportunity was really interesting to me. Also, with me being in a 3rd grade class for my observations this year, it was awesome to see such the large difference in 3rd grade writing and 4th grade writing. In Ms. Tankersley’s class we were able to have a very hands-on experience with running records. We were not only able to watch her perform a running record, but we were also able to pair up and perform a running record with other students in the class. These different opportunities to work with the students one-on-one was so beneficial. Thank you all again for being so welcoming and allowing us time out of your day to work with your students, I appreciate it so much.
Thank you so much to Oakland Heights for allowing into your bundling last Friday and having us see some of your lessons. As students fixing to be teachers anytime we get to experience a new classroom it gives us hands on experience and a better picture of how we might possibly want to create our own classroom. I loved what I saw on both classrooms and thought your school was a welcoming environment. Thank you all so much again!
Thank you Oakland Heights for allowing our ECED class to observe in your third and fourth grade classrooms. This was a great learning experience for myself as well as my peers. In Mrs. Berry's classroom, we were given the opportunity to administer running records. This was very beneficial to me and allowed me to gain a better understanding of how to do this effectively. Mrs. Berry also informed us of how to score the running records and how to interpret the data. In Mrs. Harris' class, we were able to work with students on fluency. I really like the idea of each student having a fluency folder that they use to practice with a partner and monitor their own progress. I was also able to work with a few students and practice onset and rime. I had a great experience and learned many things that will benefit me when I become a teacher in the near future. Again, thank you for the opportunity to observe and work in your school!
Thank you to the Oakland Heights School for allowing us to come into their classrooms. Thanks you to Mr. Livermoore for telling us his expectations for his interns so I know what I should be prepared for next semester. I know the information I should be looking over during Christmas break to prepare myself. I also enjoyed reviewing with the students and finding things for them to fix on the spot. Thank you to Mrs. Tankersley for showing us how to take a running record while a student reads and letting us administer a running record ourselves. I learned so much about what is expected when you take the record and asking students questions after they read. I enjoyed this visit so much!
Thank you Oakland for allowing us to come and be a part of your class time! I really enjoyed getting to administer a Running Record for the first time and I found the experience to be very beneficial. Thanks again!
Thank you Oakland Heights for the awesome experience with your faculty and students! I got to see what is expected in a fourth grade paper, I received tips for internship, and I even got to conduct a running record on a very smart third grader! I loved being able to do a running record on a student, because I have not yet had much practice with that. The teachers were welcoming and had good advice for us! The handout on running records was so helpful, and I have looked over it a few times since the visit! I'm thankful for such a wonderful school in this area along with the other Russellville schools! Thank you for allowing us to be apart of your day!

Thank you so much Oakland Heights for letting our class come observe in your school! Mrs. Berry was super helpful with the running records. We got to conduct a running record with a student in her class and then Mrs. Berry explained what it all means. I had never conducted a running record so this was very beneficial. In Mrs. Harris' class, we got to work with two students on their fluency. They were such sweet kids and I enjoyed getting to talk with them. Thank you again for this opportunity!
Thank you so much to the Oakland Heights teachers and principal that let us come into your classes. It was wonderful to get to be in Mr. Livermore's class and watch his class write their papers. I really enjoyed getting to help them too and read over and edit their papers with them. Mrs. Tankersley did a wonderful job of showing how to do running records and getting to do one of my own with a student was amazing. This whole experience was so helpful and I really appreciated the time each of the teachers gave to us. Thank you again to Oakland Heights teachers and principals!
Thank you so much to Oakland Heights for allowing our class to come in and watch your classes and learn from your teachers. I am observing at Oakland Heights this semester and this is such a wonderful school that works together to make everything as easy as they can for the students. Thank you to Mr. Livermore for letting us know some expectations of an intern and letting us work one on one with your students. I haven't been able to observe in any classes in 3rd or 4th grade so it was very beneficial for me. Also a big thank you to Mrs. Tankersley for demonstrating how to complete a running record, I know that for many of us, that was the first time that we have actually done one on our own. Thank you again to everyone that worked with us!
Thank you so much to Mr. Livermore for showing us how his class works on writing prompts. He was very honest and upfront about telling us that we need to know what proficiency looks like for the grade we are teaching but also what it looks like for the grade below and above because not all the students will be on the same level and we need to help them where they are at. He also told us really important things about conferencing with students and then allowed us to practice with his students and see their writing. Also, thank you to Ms. Tankersley for showing us how to do a running record and for answering all of our questions. I definitely feel most comfortable with how to do a running record and work with students on their writing after being in these two classrooms. And thank you to the other teachers that allowed us to come as well!
